Introduction to electric motors

49

Electric motors that operate on direct current are used in everything from children’s toys to the Mars Exploration Rover. Understanding the types and components of a DC motor is important for anyone working with electric motors. Electric motors that operate on single-phase alternating current are used in most kitchen appliances and many low power industrial machines. Understanding the types of single-phase AC motors is important for anyone working with electric motors.

In this course you’ll learn how to define a series connected wound motor, how to define a shunt connected wound motor and how to define a compound connected wound motor. You’ll also be able to define a split-phase motor, to define a capacitor start motor and to define a capacitor run motor. Finally, you’ll understand how a three-phase motor operates.
